A newer Alhambra location of Baja Mar Taco, tucked into the Valley-Fremont Plaza on West Valley Boulevard, running a different $1.99 taco special every weekday: shrimp on Monday, asada or pastor or chicken on Tuesday, fish on Wednesday, and an $8.25 burrito with a drink on Thursday. Portions run large for the price, every order comes with a whole roasted yellow chile pepper, and the register is set up as a no-tipping counter. Food comes out fast and, for now, there is no line.

Don't overthink it.
Eat in SGV StaffThe Wednesday special, $1.99. A jumbo piece of battered fish fried to order on a doubled corn tortilla, with shredded cabbage, pico de gallo, and a thin white sauce. Fried fresh enough that it is almost too hot to hold. One of the bigger fish tacos in Alhambra.
Eat in SGV StaffTuesday special, $1.99. Marinated pork with a slight natural sweetness and no heavy salt, on a doubled corn tortilla with raw onion and cilantro. Juicier than the chicken thanks to a bit more fat. One of our two favorites here.
Eat in SGV StaffTuesday special, $1.99. Small-diced grilled steak with a good char and a big, almost hamburger-like beefy flavor, oilier than the pastor. Same onion and cilantro on a doubled tortilla. The other of our two favorites.
Eat in SGV StaffTuesday special, $1.99. Seasoned diced chicken with onion and cilantro. If you like a chicken taco it is good, just leaner and a little drier than the pastor or asada, so add the green or red salsa.
Eat in SGV Staff$7.25, not tied to any special. The guacamole is mixed fresh when you order, but comes light on onion, lime, and jalapeno, so it reads mostly of plain avocado. The chips are thin and crisp. It is the priciest single item here, and it cost more than the whole Tuesday taco order.

"If it is your first visit, come on a Tuesday or a Wednesday and order to the special. On Tuesday, get the pastor and the asada. The pastor is tender with a faint natural sweetness, and the asada is the beefiest of the three with a good char. If you are a chicken taco person the chicken is still good, just a little drier than the other two, so hit it with the green or red salsa. Wednesday is fish taco day at the same $1.99, jumbo and fried to order, and worth a trip on its own. Every order already comes with a whole roasted yellow pepper, so try that before you reach for the red salsa, which carries real heat."
