Yunnan Restaurant in Monterey Park is known for sour and spicy flavors. You grab cold deli items think cucumber, pig ear, sliced sour potatoes, spicy tofu and they're delicious. For hot dishes, the spicy fish filet and toothpick lamb are big hits. Portions are generous, food comes out fast, and whether you dine in or take out, if you like spicy, this is your spot.
If you're looking for value, Fuxing Spring in Monterey Park is tough to beat. Their lunch specials run from 10 am to 5 pm and come with soup, hot tea, and huge portions, all for around $13. We got the curry beef rice plate and had leftovers for dinner. The claypot rice takes 25 minutes, but the crispy bottom layer is totally worth the wait.
Huge Tree Pastry in Monterey Park specializes in Taiwanese breakfast items like fantuan, soy milk, and dumplings. Fantuan is a sticky-rice roll stuffed with Chinese pickles, egg, fried dough, meat floss, and more. If you haven't had homemade soy milk, you need to try it here, cold or hot, sweet or salty. Prices range from $2.50 to $5.95, and since it's to-go only you'll be in and out fast.
