OMA is a Mexican craft kitchen on Main Street in Alhambra, in the former Delhi Belly space. The chef cooks what he learned from his grandmother and makes nearly everything in-house, from a 45-ingredient mole to birria braised for six hours, with every plate built to look as good as it tastes. OMA invited the Eat in SGV team for a complimentary meal; our notes are our own.

Don't overthink it.
Eat in SGV StaffThe one to get. Beef braised for six hours, tender and well seasoned, with a peppery consommé for dunking. It runs a little salty. The menu lists melted cheese; ours came without, so ask the staff if you want it adjusted.
Eat in SGV StaffBig chunks of ahi tuna with avocado, serrano, and citrus on a crisp tostada, finished with chili oil. Eat it fast; it gets messy and softens as it sits.
Eat in SGV StaffNot on the printed menu when we visited, so ask for it. Cheese-stuffed enchiladas under a house mole made with 45 ingredients: roasted, gently sweet, and almost like melted chocolate. Not for everyone, but worth trying if you like mole.
Eat in SGV StaffSea bass marinated in citrus with onion, cilantro, and tomato, served with crispy tostadas. Bright and herbaceous. It is cured, not cooked, so skip it if you avoid raw fish.
Eat in SGV StaffSix crisp taquitos in chicken, beef, and potato, stacked and topped with cotija crema and cabbage. A generous starter; they can run dry on their own, so use the sauces.
Eat in SGV StaffChicken tortilla soup on our visit, loaded with shredded chicken, cilantro, radish, and tortilla strips. Add a squeeze of lime.
Eat in SGV StaffFresh, crisp outside and doughy inside, with cinnamon sugar, Mexican chocolate sauce, and vanilla ice cream. Not too sweet.

"If it's your first visit, order the slow-cooked birria tacos and dunk every bite in the consommé. Add the spicy tuna tostadas and eat them right away, before the shell softens. If you have a food allergy or avoid dairy, ask the staff first; they were happy to adjust dishes for us."

A newer Alhambra location of Baja Mar Taco, tucked into the Valley-Fremont Plaza on West Valley Boulevard, running a different $1.99 taco special every weekday: shrimp on Monday, asada or pastor or chicken on Tuesday, fish on Wednesday, and an $8.25 burrito with a drink on Thursday. Portions run large for the price, every order comes with a whole roasted yellow chile pepper, and the register is set up as a no-tipping counter. Food comes out fast and, for now, there is no line.

If you love tacos packed with flavor, Secret Taco is a must-try. The smoky char on the meat is incredible, and their al pastor with pineapple on top is delicious. Plus, you can grab as much salsa, onions, and toppings as you want at the self-serve bar. It's perfect for anyone who wants bold flavors and a lively, street-style taco experience.
